PhD thesis summary
Title: Multimorbidity patterns, risk of depression and mortality in a sample of elderly people: Results of a large harmonized cohort.
Overview: Due the increase in life expectancy, the number of years lived with disability with one or more chronic conditions (CC) has grown. Multimorbidity is more frequent, and it is associated with a lower quality of life, more use of health services and an increased risk of premature mortality. Moreover, this risk is greater in people with mental disorders, who have a higher incidence of CC; and people with CC have a higher risk of developing mental disorders, thus there is a bidirectional relationship, because they have common risk factors.
Aims: To identify multimorbidity patterns in different countries; determine the risk of developing depression in elderly people who suffer chronic conditions; and, determine the mortality associated with each pattern of multimorbidity in people with or without comorbid depression.
Hypothesis: (1) People with CC will have a greater incidence of depression than those without chronic medical conditions, (2) Mortality associated with different multimorbidity patterns, will be greater in people with depression, (3) Some factors involved on the mortality of people with physical and mental comorbidity could be: low socioeconomic level, older age, loneliness, substance use and poor physical activity.
Methodology: The analyses will be carried out on the harmonized dataset taking into account 15 of the 18 longitudinal studies of aging that take part in the ATHLOS project.
